THE STORY:

Lenny Williams wrote -

MANDALA HOUSE* provides self-directed healing programs to post & conflict populations. Working with a trauma-sensitive yoga & breath awareness model in a group dynamic, we teach mind/body awareness tools that our practitioners can take into their lives--healing themselves & others.

The MANDALA HOUSE “Toolkit for Trauma” offers an encapsulated program model using yoga/breathing exercises/body awareness meditation and non-violent communication. Therapeutic models of partnering NGOs is complemented by yoga & meditation techniques that help bridge the mind/body connection and create a pathway to self-healing. MANDALA HOUSE empowers our practitioners by providing them with skills that can be taken with them wherever they go.

Beginning in February 2016, MANDALA HOUSE Sr. Teacher George Acire, will be working to create an ongoing yoga program for inmates at the men's prison in Jinja, Uganda. The program will begin with George mentoring Timothy Kasango—a Ugandan yoga teacher— over 12 weeks. During this time Timothy will be learning trauma-sensitive methods for teaching yoga in vulnerable populations by assisting George during bi-weekly beneficiary outreach classes at the prison. Participants will be chosen by prison staff based on their exemplary leadership qualities and interest in yoga.

Upon completion of the training, Timothy will continue to teach 2 classes a week to the general prison population.

The MANDALA HOUSE JINJA PRISON PROGRAM will consist of TWO initial training sessions:

Feb 15 - March 21: George to trai Timothy at the Jinja Prison (male side) for 6-weeks (two-days per week). George will lead classes for 10 Leadership Track Inmates, Timothy will assist. There will be debriefing sessions andTimothy will be responsible for completing a Weekly Class Report.

April 4 - May 6: Timothy will lead classes with George assisting. George will provide teaching feedback to Timothy and both will report to MH via Weekly Class Reports. George will complete Trainee Progress Report, Timothy will share his class structure and obstacles/positives from teaching.

Continuing Classes: Upon approval from MH, Timothy will continue teaching two classes per week for six, 6-week sessions over the course of 2016. Timothy’s solo classes are expected to begin on May 23, 2016. He will be expected to submit Weekly Class Reports in order to receive teaching stipend.

During the two-week break from May 6 - May 23, short program questionnaires will be given to Prison staff and Leadership Inmates so that we can gauge interest in the program and where we can improve the experience. Based on these insights the decision will be made to dis/continue the program and what, if any, changes need to be made in order to improve the program.
