About five years ago I was asked to pull together a team of five to participate in an event with a corporate banking partner. So I grabbed four coworkers, a few corporate branded hats and headed to the Cincinnati ToolBank.
I had no idea what the ToolBank was let alone the impact they had on the local community. We were given some swag, donuts and coffee; ducked our heads inside to see a ton of blue tools, and listened to a welcome message about what this organization was about. To be honest, I don’t remember much, I was just enjoying a day out of the office.
That day it was a hot one - we were teamed up with about ten others from businesses around town and tasked with trimming forsythia at Friendship Park. The day dragged on and about 2pm we were ready To call it quits - we grabbed a replacement shirt and headed for the after party. Some networking and a few beers later and I started to have a crush on the organization.
Fast forward a year and the COO asked me if I wanted to put together another group to attended the same Banking on the Community event - a treat for the hard work I had been putting in. I happily agreed and grabbed some of my favorite coworkers. This time we were connected with the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation. You guys this is when that crush turned into puppy love.
We worked that day - I’ve got the photo of my flip flops to prove it. Ripping out shrubs, trimming trees, painting murals, planting flowers, mulching - we did a number on that block. The partners we worked with were awesome and so in love with the work they were doing-I admired them so much! These were my people. It was a a amazing day.
Over the past three years I look forward to every May getting a note saying “pull the team together and have fun”. I’ve been blessed to get to know the leadership through this once a year event and see the passion by which they operate on.
This year I was asked to be on acouple of committees (Banking and the H&A fundraisers). My love of this organization continues to grow the more I get involved and see the impact they have on our community. Events with my church - blue tools are there. Fundraisers I attend, tools of change from the ToolBank are in action.
Every time I speak to someone about their personal non-profit and volunteer passions I ask if they utilize the ToolBank. When they are, my heartbsoars. When they go “what’s the ToolBank?” I tend to geek out sharing the financial savings the ToolBank can bring to their organization.
Needless to say I’m hooked. Supporting an organization that supports so many others is a win win for all. Please consider supporting this amazing organization as they continue to grow and reach new organizations and opportunities. ⚒
