Can you imagine having to travel several hours across the state, sometimes from another state, in order to get treatment for an illness, or congenital disease, or after suffering through trauma? Now imagine going through that as a young child. For some of these kids, it's all they have ever known. In the 6 years I've worked for the UNC Children's Hospital I have met patients representing almost every one of the 100 counties in North Carolina, as well as those from South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia. Instead of going to school and playing outside like other children, these kiddos are spending their free time admitted in the hospital, or visiting UNC for numerous clinic appointments, tests and procedures. The sacrifices the families make is astounding, and the enduring strength and positive attitudes they have to continue to fight every day is inspiring. A lot of us take our health for granted, and everything that comes along with it. I have a new perspective on my family life and I owe that to these amazing families.
