On May 3rd, 2010, Yeardley Love, who was then a senior lacrosse player at the University of Virginia and three weeks shy of her graduation, was beaten to death by her ex- boyfriend. Here is what Yeardley's mother has to say about her daughter as listed in the foundation's website... "To know Yeardley was to love her - she was happy, kind, hard-working, humble, honest, fun, and enthusiastic. Yards, as we called her, grew up in Baltimore, MD with her older sister Lexie and attended St. Joseph’s School and Notre Dame Preparatory School. She was a four-time letter winner at NDP in both field hockey and lacrosse. In addition to her schoolwork and athletic endeavors, she always gave of herself to others, enjoying working with underprivileged children and the elderly. Mary Bartel, NDP's lacrosse coach, explains "Yeardley was the core personality of our team. She was our laughter, a good soul. She always knew how to lighten things up." During her high school years, Yeardley's father sustained a long battle with cancer, and he died in 2003. To honor their father, Yeardley and Lexie vowed to live their lives to the fullest and to make him proud. As such, Yeardley fulfilled her dream to go to the University of Virginia (UVA), where she majored in government and minored in Spanish, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and a member of the nationally ranked UVA women's lacrosse team. UVA's lacrosse coach, Julie Myers, said that "Yeardley was the player who always made everyone feel better. What I will always remember about her is her smile and her readiness to play anything we asked of her.” Yeardley lived her life with integrity, gratitude and honesty -- and lots of laughter. She saw the best in everyone, and was always there to give a helping hand. Her leadership on her lacrosse team and at school resonated with her friends and peers. All of the work we do at the One Love Foundation celebrates and honors the positive spirit and kindness that Yeardley personified. We are committed not only to honoring Yeardley’s memory, but also to saving others from suffering the same fate. Our work is rooted in our honest belief that relationship violence is an epidemic that can be stopped when young adults are educated and empowered to affect change in their communities." The One Love Foundation's goal is to honor Yeardley Love by bringing an end to Relationship Violence by educating, empowering and activating campus communities in a movement for change. We know that, given the chance, Yeardley certainly would have wanted to help. My name is Christie Freer and this semester I have had the incredible privilege of being the in office student volunteer for the One Love Foundation. This movement has a special place in my heart and any way I can help give back is the least I can do. I am also a Senior at Manhattanville College and the Captain of the Women's Soccer. Being an athlete who has seen Escalation (the workshop from One Love) I can attest to how powerful this program is. The workshop is engaging, eye opening and makes a HUGE difference in helping students identity the warning signs of relationship abuse. This is why this year the #mvillecolorrun has chose to partner with this foundation for our event. This year the #mvillecolorrun theme is "Run for One Love". All funds raised will go towards supporting the nonprofit organization the One Love Foundation. The run will be hosted on the Manhattanville College campus located @ 2900 Purchase Street, Purchase NY 10577. The event will be action-packed featuring live music, One Love inspired tabling events, concession stands & best of all a paint party at the finish line of the race! We hope to see all our fellow One Love friends the day of the race and encourage you to extend the invite to friends & family- all are welcome! Our goal is to be able to run Yards for Yeardley throughout this sole event! That means we needs at least 160 runners to sign up and I am confident we can meet this challenge. We know that not all our supporters will be able to attend this event which is why we want to our fellow supporters to be able to donate here as well! Any amount of donation helps and makes a difference in saving a life and ending relationship abuse!
