THE STORY:

You know those little bits of plastic that are in lines along the beaches? They are bits that have broken off the garbage patch in the North Pacific Gyre. They have been at sea for some 50 years. As they float around, they are absorbing pollutants that are in the water. By the time they wash up on the beaches during storm season, these colorful shards pose a threat to marine wildlife that confuse them for food, our four-legged friends who play among them, and to us who build our s'mores fires and sandcastles over them.
Here's the good news! Our friend and neighbor in Seaside, Marc Ward of Sea Turtles Forever, has developed a simple technology that allows us to easily filter the sand, collecting even the smallest pieces of plastic and leaving pristine sand in our wake. The attached video shows you the cleanup process on another beautiful Oregon beach.
From June 15-21, 2015, a large pool of volunteers and Marc's team are going to clean two of the seven miles of Neakhahnie Beach in Manzanita, OR. This is a collaborative project of citizens, visitors, Tillamook Sanitation, business owners, master recyclers, Sea Turtles Forever contractors, and CARTM. But we need your help. Both with volunteering and funding for this project. While we have our sights set on two of the most used miles of beach, we aim to do the entire 7 miles and beyond in future years. This year our focus is to train a large pool of volunteers that we can rely on for future cleanups. You see, this isn't going away. It's going to get worse. The plastic is coming. The heaviest landfall occurs every winter. Our goal is to not only prevent this plastic from returning to the ocean but to have the beaches clean and ready to go for every summer season. You can help make this happen through your donations and through volunteering to help with the cleanup. Thank you!
