MARATHON4MOMMA - CAMPAIGN TO HELP EDEN's MOM WITH CFIDS/ME
Organized by: Eden Wetherell
Event Name: The San Francisco Marathon 2016
This is my 1st ever marathon! I am running as a 28 year old 1-Woman-Bandstand to raise awareness for the rare and incurable immune disease my mom Alison McDonald "Aly Mick" has battled with for 20 years, called M.E.. My mom used to be a strong a personal trainer (for 30 years!) and is now bed-ridden with fibromyalgia, chronic pain and migraines, an inability to regulate her body temperature, and is plagued by infection after infection and sickness after sickness due her compromised immune system. She says the ME/CFIDS resides in her DNA (*fingers crossed* my 3 siblings and I will be okay) and the slow decline started after she got early onset mono in her thirties and a surgery that left her with Staph infection. We think these infections have caused a string of abnormal neurological changes in her brain and central nervous system due to the presence of ME. ...I remember the days when everyone wanted her as a personal trainer and when she was my soccer coach growing up: she was lively and vibrant and I just want to see her that happy again. My mom is only 56 years young. From my Mom to me in a text about what CFIDS/ME really is: "M.E. stands for Myalgic Encephalomyopathy and C.F.I.D.S. is Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome, but ME is the real name for all the people diagnosed with CFIDS. Out of 1,000,000 cases in the U.S., more than 3/4 haven't been diagnosed properly or are receiving appropriate care. Our deaths are usually attributed to lung infection or cancer. If an HIV patient . . . catches ME, they relapse and become gravely ill. We have 25 years off our life expectancy, and a 500% higher risk of Lymphoma and Leukemia. We don't sleep, and are always fatigued. We are trying to kick the Chronic Fatigue name." Read more on ME/CFIDS here: http://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/myalgic-encephalomyelitis/. My mom is on disability government funding and gets a stipend for food, but can barely afford her rent. She is allowed to receive donations, but if she works (which is very hard when you are in so much pain and can't even get out of bed), chances are, what little government funding she receives could be stripped from her. My grandmother is almost 80 and has been providing for her for years and still works 2 jobs so she help my Mom...she is very tired too. Albeit a young woman, I am stepping up to the plate and taking on financial responsibility, to ensure my Mom doesn't have to struggle (at least financially) by running this marathon. I have started looking for a job that pays more than my current hourly wage so I can give her at least $400 myself of my living pay to her monthly. Any little bit of money raised here would help her to buy a used car to get to and from her amazing doctors and specialists in Florida where she lives, and provide for some simple living expenses. Please "Like" and invite people to the Facebook Page just by searching "Marathon4Momma" and following my training progress. To hear updates and more about her story, check out her pre-existing fundraiser here: https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/ygs9/please-help-my-daughter. Thanks again for your support! Good energy sent her way is always a welcome donation too... :).
