UPDATE: After having completed my first marathon I have signed up for another one for 2017, the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon. This fundraiser will continue as I train for this next marathon with my girlfirend who will be completing her first full length marathon.
Over the last 3 years I have lost a friend to, and have had a close family member struggle with an opiate addiction. Although it is not as widely and openly discussed as cancer or other ailments, drug addiction is truly a disease that touches the lives of all those around it. I think it is immensely important to spread awareness and take steps in the right direction to treat drug and opiate addiction as a disease. A recently discovered vaccine, by Dr. Kim Janda, that will prevent opiates from triggering addictive pathways in those affected is being researched and put through clinical trials at the Pearson Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research within the Scripps Research Institute. I personally see this as an amazing alternative treatment that has potential to perform with much greater success than current pharmaceutical treatments out there. This new vaccine development has given me hope that there is help on the way for those everywhere with this disease. This is why I am fund raising through the platform of my first marathon, the Mountains2Beach Marathon on May 29th (UPDATE: COMPLETED!!!!!), to support the research being done at The Scripps Institute.
Any donation will go directly to Scripps (a 501c3 institution) with the exception of a very small processing fee taken by Crowdrise for payment processing. I will recieve no money or compensation from any donations.
