BENEFITING: METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY CHURCH OF NEW YORK
Hi everybody! Against my better judgment, I’m running the 2017 New York City Marathon, the largest in the world, and my second after I did the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon in DC. I’m hoping this one goes better (the last one featured a knee injury at mile 18 and I dragged myself the last 8.2 miles across the line because I am stubborn and insane).
As part of running the marathon, I am raising funds for Gays Against Guns, which most of you know I’ve been involved with since the GAG was founded last year, just after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando where 49 members of the LGBTQ & allied community were killed and another 50+ were injured. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, in spite of the fact that in America we have a new mass shooting about once per day, and we have over 30,000 people a year killed by guns.
Gays Against Guns NY is an inclusive direct action group of LGBTQ people and their allies committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry's chain of death—investors, manufacturers, the NRA and politicians who block strong gun laws. If you haven’t checked in on the NRA yet, last year they were one of the largest contributors to Trump’s campaign and helped get him elected, and this is the message of violence and fear that they’re currently selling to the American people.
Your donation will help GAG purchase supplies and materials for our direct action protests and pieces of street theater, pay for our travel to and participation in actions and protests out of state, and our work to help expand the Gays Against Guns movement to cities and communities across the country.
I wasn’t sure about a goal to set, but $49 for each of the 49 seems like a good place to start. As a bonus, for each dollar you contribute to Gays Against Guns (up to $3600), Bloomberg will generously donate a dollar to Everytown for Gun Safety, another incredible nonprofit advocating for gun control and gun violence. Co-chaired by Mike himself, Everytown has been a constant thorn in the NRA’s side since its creation. Your donations are completely tax deductible (through a fiscal sponsorship arrangement between GAG and the Metropolitan Community Church of New York).
I couldn’t be prouder to be using this marathon to raise funds for these two groups – GAG, which Fox News has called a “group of the largest, most mentally and emotionally unhinged” – and Everytown, which for over 10 years has fought for change. Thank you so much for your generosity!
* : I am not compensated by GAG (or Everytown) in any way, although it is possible I will indirectly benefit from your generosity. As an example, last year, GAG subsidized part of the cost of a bus trip to New Hampshire for us to protest gun-loving Senator Kelly Ayotte, for example (AND SHE LOST! WOOT WOOT!). I haven't received any actual cash from GAG, other than a reimbursement for one time I paid out of pocket for materials at Kinkos before a protest.
