BENEFITING: U S TOKYO ENGLISH LIFE LINE INC
EVENT DATE: Feb 28, 2016
I have lived in Japan for 8 years and in Tokyo for the past 4. This country is amazing in many ways but there is little to no awareness or acceptance of mental health issues. It is either assumed not to exist or is simply swept under the carpet. As a foreigner living in Japan and indeed away from well established support systems, such as close friends and family, it is vital to have a lifeline here. TELL provides this for many people and their families. I have seen this first hand through the school that I teach at; The British School in Tokyo. We liaise with TELL to reach out to families who need may need that extra support for their children. For me, someone who deals with high amounts of anxiety, it is comforting to know that there is always support at hand 24 hours a day. That is not to say that I don't have close friends and indeed a wonderful Japamily here but what is most beneficial is that someone out of the loop is available to listen and offer advice.
I have run many long distance races in the past, but I have not done this for a while. I have also never run a full marathon! With only a few weeks left my training is in full swing and some days are liberating and extremely motivating, while others are painful to say the least. I am determined to do this for a better cause other than my own personal satisfaction and bucket list box ticking. I would love to give a little to a charity that is offering something close to my heart. Please sponsor me, with as much or little as you like, because everyone needs that lifeline from time to time.
