EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
This year I am running the New York City Marathon on Nov 1. It takes time, commitment and really hard work. It requires early mornings, sacrifice and dedication to get through long training runs in heat, rain, wind or cold. But I am not doing all of this for me. I am running because I am passionate about breaking down barriers to empower people to live the life they deserve and dream of. That is why this I am running to help victims of Human Trafficking. And I am asking for your help.
Right now, over 20 million children, women and men who are desperate, vulnerable or both are ensnared in a highly lucrative system called Human Trafficking. The commercial exploitation of children, women and men for labor or sex is a human rights abuse. Human trafficking is the second most profitable form of transnational crime after drug trafficking, generating an estimated $150 billion in yearly profits.
While traffickers run highly lucrative and efficient businesses, the professionals best equipped to empower and advocate for victims are disconnected from each other and their responses are scattered. The consequence is that victims fall through the cracks and the traffickers escape punishment to commit their crimes again.
Earlier this year, I was very proud to announce the launch of ALIGHT - Alliance to Lead Impact in Global Human Trafficking, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. We care deeply about delivering justice and a chance for a healthy life to individuals who have been trafficked.
ALIGHT is building the first online networking portal that connects anti-trafficking advocates and legal practitioners across the world. We envision a world where anti-trafficking professionals have the resources to achieve justice and restitution for victims of trafficking. ALIGHT will amplify the valuable resources and efforts of anti-trafficking advocates to tackle the problems too big for any one person to handle.
Human trafficking is a problem of immense scale and international scope. Working together we can do infinitely more than we can do alone. Please support my marathon and donate to ALIGHT now.
