Mariah's Opportunity to Help Ghana!
Organized by: Mariah Hill
First off, I want to thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to even visit this page. Whether you stumbled here on accident, perhaps on your way to a different page, or you clicked a link that I shared with you, I greatly appreciate you. It means the world to me that you have even read this far. If you are unfamiliar with who I am, I highly encourage you to visit my profile and read a bit about me in general. I am going to try to keep this as simple as possible, while still conveying how excited I am for this trip and what I want to accomplish by going on this adventure. My adventure in Ghana starts March 1st, 2017 (much too far away, if I may add)!!! I am going through an organization called International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ, for short). They are a fabulous organization that fits you with a country and program based on what you want to experience and the impact that you want to make. They help with the logistics that accompanies flying across the world and staying there for months on end. My trip, in particular, is going to be a minimum of 3 months (you pick a minimum duration and can extend it once there if you want to continue working in the area) and I am going to be contributing to THREE separate projects!! The first is teaching. I am going to be teaching my VERY OWN class. Most of the children are young, between 5-15, but this depends on the need when I get there! I have the opportunity to share my excitement of teaching and learning. But beyond that, through my lessons, I hope that I can instill in them confidence, that I can empower them with knowledge, and that they are excited to share what they learned with others. My second project is childcare (child and care in the same word... what more could I ask for?). I will be taking care of children in a local orphanage who do not have families or homes of their own. In general, we shower them, prep them for school, make sure they are fed, and help make them feel like they are part of a community and that they are loved. I hope that, even though they are experiencing something so unimaginably horrible in my eyes, that I can fill their day with positivity, smiles, laughter, and maybe, just maybe, a sense of home and belonging. Finally, for my third project, I am going to get some experience in village health care. I will be shadowing and assisting physicians and nurses who work in a very small, local clinic. I may also be able to do a bit of healthcare education on topics such as personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS, and nutrition! Although direct patient care will be sparse during this trip, I hope that this final experience will leave me itching to come back when I have achieved my medical degree so that I can directly impact those in need with my own expertise! I cannot wait for the journey ahead. If I had the finances available to me, I would jump on a plane right now and be off to Ghana in no time, but I do need a little help getting there. The most expensive part of the trip is getting there and getting back (although I'm not sure that I will WANT to come back... my mom just says that I have to). The flights alone are around $1,500 one way. If you could spare the change you'd spend on your morning coffee (and as an avid coffee drinker, I know this is asking a lot), I would be forever grateful to you. Please help me reach these precious people in hopes that I can make their lives just a little bit better by being there (:
