Support Marianna Palka
Organized by: Marianna Palka
Marianna Palka, a young actress-filmmaker, is the subject of The Lion's Mouth Opens, a new short documentary from director Lucy Walker (The Crash Reel, Waste Land). In the film, Marianna has decided to undergo genetic testing to see if she has inherited the gene for Huntington's disease, an incurable, fatal hereditary disease that many of her family members have.
1 in 10,000 Americans have HD, which has been described as a combination of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and ALS, and about 200,000 are at risk - yet only about 10% of those at risk decide to undergo genetic testing. The decision to get tested is a deeply personal one and in The Lion's Mouth Opens, Marianna courageously shares her experience.
Through her participation in the film’s release, Marianna is sharing her story to help increase HD awareness nationwide. She is speaking at a number of upcoming screenings of the film, creating a website page to provide HD resources and nutrition trios, as well as working directly with supportive organizations, like the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA). Marianna needs your help to continue raising HD awareness after the HBO broadcast premiere of The Lion's Mouth Opens.
Anything you can contribute to help Marianna travel to screenings, conferences, and community events would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.
