I have the extraordinary opportunity and honor to help realize an incredible project - one of the first schools to be built in the world’s newest country, South Sudan. I am about to leave my beloved Texas to become the inaugural intern at Rebuild Sudan, a global NGO working to build schools in the region. The challenges to building in South Sudan are unique and opportunities for design innovation abound. As a budding architect preparing to pursue my Master’s degree next fall, I couldn’t ask for a more fascinating and rewarding project to work on or more dedicated and talented people to work with.
About the Jalle School:
As South Sudan celebrates its independence, thousands of those displaced by 21 years of brutal civil war are returning home to a country in desperate need of basic services. One of these people is Rebuild Sudan founder Michael Kuany. Sectarian violence forced Michael to flee his home in the region of Jalle as a child and live as a refugee for the next 20 years before coming to the US. Michael’s hope and Rebuild Sudan’s vision is to bring peace to this war-torn region through education, beginning with this much-needed school. The school will be a community hub for performance and lectures, a public library, and refuge from flood waters, in addition to being a safe and comfortable place to learn. It will be the only permanent structure in the region.

Where I come in:
Rebuild Sudan is bringing me on board at a critical point where my additional pair of hands will be instrumental in pushing the project into the construction phase. I’ll be conducting design research, learning about the daily operations of managing a NPO project, and coordinating the integration of materials that push the boundaries of building technology. In addition to my work in New Hampshire I will travel with the Rebuild Sudan team in late fall for the groundbreaking of the Jalle school.
Where you come in:
I am interning on a volunteer basis and I need to raise funds to primarily cover my travel and living expenses. My goal of $4,000 includes airfare to South Sudan, which alone costs $1600. Your support not only provides me with this incredible learning experience but also directly impacts the progress of this amazing project. Please consider giving so that I can devote the next few months to making this school and its long-term benefits a living, breathing reality.
