BENEFITING: Pike Place Market Foundation
As a teenager, I fell in love with the Market.
I walked through the Market in the wee hours on my way to art school just as the vendors were setting up their stalls. If I had an extra dollar in my pocket, I would stop at Le Panier for a cappuccino and a croissant before school. While some of my friends would pine for an artist's life in Europe, I had all of the makings of such right here in my backyard!
After class, I would go to my job waitressing at the Pike Place Bar & Grill perched over the heart of the Market. From there, I would see every walk of life - the tourist family hoping to squeeze in one more checklist item of buying flowers or salmon to bring home; the daystall vendors bantering with each other on the news of the day; the street musicians pulling the larger bills out of the guitar case and leaving only the ones and quarters; the balloon guy making another squeaky dog for a kid watching intently... the Market was a home away from home.
Today, I know so much more about the Market. I know that over 10 million people visit the Market each year making it one of the country's most globally recognized icons. I know that cities across the world have sent their dignitaries and leaders to study our Market because it represents such a successful marriage of commerce and community spirit. I know that senior citizens of low-income can live in the Market enjoying the views built typically for kings. I know that young babies and toddlers can go to one of the most abundantly diverse, creative and fruitful preschools. I know that the pulse of this Market beats with love stories and the history of this Market is a testament to the power of "it takes a village".
This Market is my Market ... is your Market ... is our Market...
We have a responsibility to make our stories of yesterday last and to share new ones for our tomorrow.
I am asking you to help me... in any small or grand way, to contribute to the MarketFront campaign. We are so close to our goal of building more space, more businesses, and more services to help everyone who comes to know this great place that their stories are what makes this place so special.
Make your mark last a lifetime. Give today!
