Thank you so much for visiting my page. This year I will be attempting the New York City 5 Borough Series. Completing this would mean that I would have finished the official NYRR 5 race series in each of the five New York City boroughs. Eeek! I mean, Wooo!
Those that know me well, know that prior to training for my first half last year (Brooklyn half, May '11), I had never run more than 4 miles consecutively. I have always been pretty active, but running is certainly not my forte. Putting the obvious challenges this feat presents aside, I will have to put much more work in both physically and mentally to get into the "runners" mindset since I'm still a newbie.
Despite it all, what each of you also know about me is how crazy competitve I am. So presenting myself with this challenge and accepting it was a no-brainer. This is a unique challenge; with any other sport or competition I've been involved in, the competitor was another person I had to beat. But running won't be a competition with anyone else but myself. So this really presents a unique opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and grow myself.
I don't want this challenge to be in vain, so I would like to dedicate the blood, sweat and tears I will inevitably endure throughout this year of training to a cause that is near and dear to my heart:
My father, brother and brother-in-law are all Marines, retired, inactive, active duty respectively. Once a Marine, always a Marine. :) Since as early as 2004 to as recent as August 2011, each of men did one or more tours in Iraq/Afghanistan. And sadly, there's still the possibilty my brother-in-law will have to return. I am so grateful each of them have come home safe and sound. However coming from a military family, knowing friends whose families weren't as fortunate is a sad fact.
So I'd like to dedicate my efforts to Support Our Troops, an organization focused on "helping citizens and community minded businesses find constructive ways to show their patriotism and appreciation for those that sacrifice so much to protect our country, our homes and our families". Proceeds from this organization go towards programs such as care packages for solidiers abroad, supporting children troubled with parents overseas, widowed spouses coping with the loss of a fallen soldier and so much more.
Supporting soldiers, like my Marine men, and their families through this difficult time in their lives via my fundraiser would mean so much. My goal is to raise $100 for each of the five races for a total of $500. Many thanks in advance for any contribution you can make!
Below is the schedule of halves I have ahead of me! If you're in the NYC area, come cheer me on for one or more of the races...I'll need it!
March 18 - NYC Half - (Finished)
May 19 - Brooklyn Half - (Finished)
July 1 - Queens 10k (Finished)
September 9- Bronx 10-miler
October 7 - Staten Island Half
Thank you so much again for your support!
