I am immensely thrilled to embark upon what promises to be an incredible experience. On June 24th, I will take part in the 18th edition of the Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon that will take place at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. I am going to Kenya for 3 months this summer for an internship with a development economics research NGO. I was looking for races in the region where I’m staying when I learnt about the Safaricom marathon. Here is some information about the event to give you a bit of context: Organized by Tusk, a non-profit organization and supported by Safaricom, this event allows participants from all over the globe to compete in an internationally acclaimed event whilst running through some of Africa’s most breath-taking scenery. It has developed into one of the country’s major sporting events with a reputation for being one of the ten “must do” (and one of the toughest) marathons in the world. The impact of the event has been huge and the benefits are very tangible. Since its inception the event has raised over $4.2 million for projects across Kenya. Tusk and Lewa have always shared a common goal to use wildlife conservation as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, and improve education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity. The Lewa Conservancy is at the forefront of helping the surrouding communities to initiate and promote community-driven conservation programmes, which allow the people to view wildlife as an asset and not a liability, and to adopt new livelihoods based on the sustainable use of natural resources as a way to achieve long-term development. Lewa also supports primary schools and secondary schools, which educate over 3,000 children. The organization is giving the children who live adjacent to Lewa access to the best possible education, whilst at the same time creating an awareness of the importance of conservation and their environment.
To help Tusk and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy implement their conservation and community development projects, I am committed to raising $1500. I am therefore appealing to your generosity and I encourage you to take part in my fundraising initiative. Thank you!
