Marino Hikes for Tikes!
Organized by: Marino Leone
The End, The Beginning
December 13, 2016
EVENT DATE Dec 21, 2016
By the time you start reading this I’ll be taking my first steps along the Appalachian Trail. By the time you finish reading this I’ll be swatting black flies, cursing my overweight backpack, and already sick of turkey jerky. This 2200 mile trek will undoubtedly be the most challenging undertaking of my life. Hiking ten or twenty miles every day for five months. Traversing fourteen states as I make my way from Maine to Georgia. The simplicity of a lifestyle without distraction that lends a clear mind. As I said, this will be challenging, but it will also have its rewards.
If you’re sitting there now, reading and thinking to yourself, Marino’s crazy! How can I help him on his quest? Then I love you. And I’ll tell you how you can help.
Send money! Seriously. I’ll be living as cheaply as possible, dumpster diving and foregoing hostels, running my old gear into the ground before buying replacements, but I could still use some help. The average thru-hiker spends $5,000 on the trip. (Woah!) With all the physical and mental stresses of the trail, it’d be great to not have to worry about funds.
Which is why I am asking for your donations. Not just for myself and this epic adventure but for a very worthy cause to which I would like to donate a substantial portion of the funds we raise together.
Turtle Island Preserve is a living, breathing Appalachian heritage farm nestled in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, and every summer it holds adventurous and educational camp sessions for boys and girls of all ages. Campers live simple lifestyles and learn primitive skills that bring them closer to nature and our environment. In the process, campers are implicitly and explicitly encouraged to become more self-empowered and grow in awareness, compassion and confidence. And to make this life changing experience available to all young men and women, Turtle Island has established a scholarship fund.
Those of you who know me, know how important Turtle Island Preserve has been to me and what a difference it has made in my life. In an attempt to make it as accessible as possible for those less fortunate, and as a Thank You for Turtle Island's contributions to who I'm proud to be today, I'm honored to pledge 50% of your donations to its scholarship fund. Half of what you give will help me complete my adventure, and half will help a young boy or girl have the summer of a lifetime.
So please donate what you can, and keep in mind that even smaller donations can add up quickly. Also, send me some energy and positivity whenever you remember where I am. Some days I will really need it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my upcoming adventure!
Check my facebook page and keep up with how far I’ve come. I aim to post my best few pictures every week along with a brief summary of where I’ve been.
