EVENT DATE: Sep 15, 2014
In February of 2015, I have been presented with the tremendous opportunity to be a part of the "Elevating Education" climbing team to raise money to support the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) http://www.kiberagirlssocceracademy.org , an organization located in the heart of one of Africa's largest slums. The academy provides free secondary education and extra-curricular activities for girls, and micro finance programming and financial literacy opportunities for their parents.
Additionally, the KGSA foundation is a soccer program that was started as a way to get young girls off of the streets and into something productive. This dream has aimed to promote self-awareness, empowerment, and equality... KGSA now educates over 130 girls each year in addition to providing artistic and athletic programming.
Although the academy has experienced some success, the work is far from done. The students continue to face the problems that Kibera presents. Inadequate housing, unhygienic sanitation systems, unreliable potable water and electricity, and a lack of security all take a heavy toll on individual mental and physical well being.
The Boarding & Community Center that we are hoping to build will provide safe, secure housing and living conditions; consistent electricity, water, and health-services; and academic tutoring and resources. By living at school, students will be able to better their academic performance and have their physical, mental, and emotional needs met. Ultimately, this environment will give them the space to excel toward graduation with superb marks, enrolling in college, and continuing to beat the odds.
With the help from Design Source, a Kenyan architectural firm, we have all of the proper building plans for the boarding and community center ready to go. Now all we need is the funding to send 30 adventurous climbers, including myself, to summit Africa's tallest mountain-- Mt. Kilimanjaro-- as we fundraise each step to the top.
This being said, each individual climber is responsible for raising $10,000 by September 15th, 2014 and half of that-- $5,000 by May 1st, 2014.
Of that $10,000 fundraising goal, $2,000 will pay for the needs of climbers as they summit. The remaining $8,000 will go directly towards building the Boarding & Community Center.
I need your help and the help of many to achieve this dream. You would be undeniably changing lives for the better.
Believe in your own power to change the world...The future is now.
