BENEFITING: MARIO LEMIEUX FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: MARIO LEMIEUX FOUNDATION
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
I am incredibly excited to be running the 2017 Pittsburgh Marathon as a member of "Team Lemieux", raising funds for the Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and Austin's Playroom Project. For more info on the foundation, see below... But first, my story...
I could not think of a more perfect marathon experience than running the Pittsburgh Marathon in support of The Mario Lemieux Foundation. It combines all of the things that are dear to me.... running for health, cancer research, and Pittsburgh!
I remember very clearly being 140 pounds overweight and saying to my husband, "one day....I'm going to run the Pittsburgh Marathon." At that moment in time it seemed like an impossibility to me, seeing as I couldn't run a city block at that point. I didn't know when or how, but I knew I would make it happen, and someday I would run it. That started my journey to get healthy and through lifestyle change and running I have lost 140 pounds.
When I saw there was an opportunity to run as a charity runner for Team Lemieux, it made perfect sense to me! Of course, I am a huge fan of the Penguins organization, but that is not why. Cancer research and awareness is a cause near and dear to me. 19 years ago my father lost his battle with cancer and I miss him every single day. My children never got to meet him and I feel his absence profoundly. I will be running the Marathon as a part of Team Lemieux in my father's memory and in his honor. He loved Pittsburgh as much as I do and I know that he will be right with me every step of this journey.
Help me reach my goal of running the Pittsburgh Marathon with Team Lemieux in memory of my father and celebrating the new healthier me. Donate if you are able. If you are not able, please share my page and my story with your friends! Thank you!!!!!
For more about the Mario Lemieux Foundation, read on!
The Mario Lemieux Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and patient care, as well as Austin’s Playroom Project, an initiative that creates playrooms for children and families in medical facilities. The Mario Lemieux Foundation was created in 1993 by hockey legend Mario Lemieux. In that year, Mario was enjoying the greatest season of his brilliant career and on pace to establish a new NHL scoring record. Then he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease.
After a successful battle with Hodgkin's, Mario is now 20 years cancer free and his experience led him to focus on ways to assist those not so fortunate. He devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimate goal: a cure for cancer.
