BENEFITING: Delray Students First Inc
EVENT DATE: Nov 17, 2016
Mark Sauer, founder of Delray Students First, is turning 70 this year. When Mark retired to Delray Beach years ago, he was struck by a feature that marks many of Palm Beach County’s communities. There is a vast disparity in social and economic wellbeing here in Delray Beach. A booming resort town, Delray is also home to a large low-income population that teeters on the edge of poverty. For five years as a teacher, Mark saw students in each of his classes who he realized could be strong high school scholars, and given the proper opportunity and some nurturing support, could thrive in college. The academic needs of many promising students from poor neighborhoods and poor schools were just not being met. Mark fulfilled his dream of providing underprivileged kids with college prep tutoring and life skills mentoring by launching DSF four years ago. Over the last ten years, Mark Sauer has worked tirelessly to provide a hand up for the poorest children in the Delray community. He does everything from feeding them, providing rides, tutoring classes, ensuring they have medical checkups, and bringing them to school. Delray Students First now serves over 70 children yearly who are tutored in after school programs thanks to Mark’s commitment and vision. Currently, there are 18 former DSF students enrolled in universities such as University of Miami, University of Central Florida, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Cornell University and Bryan College, most with full scholarships. These students would not have attended college were it not for the impact of Delray Students First With new programs at Atlantic High School and Village Academy, the organization is growing rapidly, and the need is great. The leadership team, under Mark's direction, envisions programs that could accommodate every single child living in the poorest areas of South Florida who has the desire to succeed academically and break the cycle of poverty. In order to get there, we must continue to build awareness and raise funds. We have set an audacious goal of $70,000 to help continue the great work being done at Delray Students First under the direction of Mark Sauer. Please help us recognize the work of this amazing man and the impact he has had on the lives of countless children. Remember, this is a surprise for Mark!
