BENEFITING: Navy SEAL Foundation

EVENT: 2014 Polar Circle Marathon

EVENT DATE: Oct 26, 2014

THE STORY:

9/20/2014 UPDATE: Mark and the team will now be running the FULL Polar Marathon on October 26th!!!

Honoring our Warriors.  Supporting their Families.

Standing with our Navy SEALs.

I am running my first ½ marathon in -20 degree temperatures on October 24th in Kangerlussaug, Greenland.   I will be part of a small team from the United States of America that includes two former Navy SEALs and four other civilians. We are running in support of the Navy SEAL Foundation and I need your help to make it a success.

The Polar Circle Marathon in Greenland is often referred to as the “coolest marathon on earth” a slight misnomer. “Coldest marathon on earth” would have been better given the harsh reality of the frigid temperatures and remoteness of the arctic tundra.  I will pass through glacier tongues and the soundless desolation of arctic terrain along with eighty other crazy people from around the globe.

So why am I doing this?

I don’t like to run, I have never run a 10k. I have certainly never run a ½ marathon.  I hate the cold and I cannot imagine running for three hours straight in below zero temperatures. I have three young children, a wife, a dog, an hour commute to work each way; everyday bills to pay, a mortgage and all the other things that come along with being an adult.

However, as complicated as life may seem at times, it pales in comparison to the everyday reality faced by the children, spouses and extended families of our most elite warriors.  Since September 11th the country has lost 91 Navy SEALs.   Left with this reality are 91 families, 78 surviving spouses and 58 children.

The Navy SEAL Foundation provides immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) community and their families, and is a cornerstone of empowerment and comfort for the families of the fallen. The Foundation is laser focused on preservation of the force and family by providing a comprehensive set of programs specifically designed to improve health and welfare, build and enhance resiliency, empower and educate their families, and provide critical support during times of illness, injury, or loss.  The NSF helps to bridge the gap of resources not already provided for by the U.S. Navy and the Department of Defense.  Sadly, more SEALs will make the ultimate sacrifice and more families will need the help of the NSF.

There are two ways you can have an immediate impact.  First, please consider making a direct donation to the foundation via my crowdrise page:

http://www.crowdrise.com/NSFPM

No amount is too little, your participation and awareness will send a strong message to our heroes and their families.  Second, I am on the host committee for the New York City Navy SEAL Foundation Dinner this December:

I am looking for additional corporate or individual sponsors to purchase a table. Please reach out to me directly for more information.

Regards,

Mark Edgar
