THE STORY:

Dear Friends,

As many of you, I serve on the Board of Directors of CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities, a pan-Asian community-based organization that works the build the power of low-income Asian immigrants and refugees in New York City.  CAAAV develops leadership in Asian communities to impact the policies and institutions that affect their lives and to participate in a broader movement for racial and economic justice.

I see firsthand how CAAAV does amazing work and am have committed to raise $250 for CAAAV as part of their Danceathon fundraiser.  Can you help me out with a donation of $10, $20, or even $50.

Let me share with you why CAAAV's leadership is so important in New York City.

After Hurricane Sandy hit, Chinatown was left in the dark. The neighborhood had no electricity, some had no running water, and many residents had no Chinese-language information about the magnitude of the storm or means of communicating with loved ones outside of the area.

CAAAV sprang into action, providing food, water, batteries, flashlights, blankets, and other necessities to Chinatown residents. We coordinated over five hundred volunteers who were able to bring relief to thousands of residents, especially the elderly and disabled stranded in the upper levels of buildings with no working elevators.

When the electricity came back on, we hosted free legal clinics in our office for those who lost property, food, wages, and jobs following the storm. At these legal clinics we heard stories from community members that reinforced our sense that our post-Sandy work is not over.

This was truly a community-based relief effort, born out of crisis, necessity, love, and solidarity. Together, we were able to fill a gaping void left by the Red Cross and City, State, and federal governments. We were able to take a situation that was disempowering, isolating, and scary, and create a space that allowed residents to take leadership in caring for one another.

CAAAV is a small, grassroots organization that relies on the support of individual donors like you to sustain our work--please consider supporting us!

with gratitude,

Mark
