THE STORY:

MARLEYS MUTTS DOG RESCUE wrote -

100% of the funds raised for Marley's Mutts will go towards establishing the "Miracle Mutts Program" that combines dog rescue & rehabilitation with drug & alcohol addiction recovery in Kern County. We have already established a partnership with The Mission at Kern County, which has a men's and women's year-long rehabilitation program that we will be very involved with in the upcoming months. We hope to expand the scope of this initiative significantly in the future.

Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue was founded by Zach Skow after dogs saved his life. Zach, who will be 5 years Clean and Sober the day before the 2013 Chicago Marathon, was near death and given a slim chance of survival after 10 years of drug and alcohol abuse left him with end-stage liver disease and a whole host of other problems. He attributes his recovery to the love of his dogs, who stayed by his side when he was sicker than sick, and showed him an enthusiasm for life that he had not experienced in a long time. Their unconditional love helped him find a reason and will to live, and he decided to make it his life's work to rescue and rehabilitate as many dogs as possible, as a "thank you" for giving him a new lease on life.

Marley's Mutts operates with a pack permanent dogs, the leader of which is named Marley.  Marley is a ten-year-old, 105 lb., Rottweiler/Pit-bull, who is gentle but assertive in his command of the pack.  Marley’s composure and careful application provides for a symbiotic relationship between the dogs.  In other words, he helps to keep them in line and prevent confrontation.  Five to seven dogs (or Marley’s mutts) have existed here at any given time over the past four years and there is rarely a negative incident.  Dogs are treated like family, which has proved to be the best way to socialize them.

Strays, derelicts, vagrants and hobos often need to be correctly socialized–and that is what we specialize in.  Marley’s mutts are with us 24 hours a day and are taught how to live like normal dogs.  Our dogs do not stay in kennels or cages. They coexist with us as if they were our own dogs.  Dogs learn the basics when they come here.  They are leash trained, housebroken, taught to ride in a vehicle but most importantly, they learn how to comport themselves around humans and other dogs. Daily off-leash pack walks in the mountains of Bear Valley Springs are an important part of socializing and training dogs, and the difference it makes in their demeanor and attitude is phenomenal.  These tools ensure that they are capable of adoption and adjusted to fit for their new adoptive homes.

Every dog that comes to the rescue is spayed or neutered and given their necessary vaccinations. Many of the dogs come in with serious health conditions ranging from Kennel Cough to severely injured limbs that require specialist surgery, which often costs thousands of dollars.

In addition to helping dogs, Zach is also very active within the Recovery community. One of Zach's goals is to give other recovering addicts the opportunity to interact with dogs, to see their enthusiasm and unconditional love for life, and use that as a tool for recovery. The rehabilitation of an addict is not unlike the rehabilitation of a scared, unsocialized, aggressive dog. It takes time, patience, routines and above all, trust.
