If you know me, you probably know that the Girl Scouts were a big part of my teenage years. Of course, there were cookies — and I certainly spent a lot of time selling cookies. But more importantly, Girl Scouts took me to places I never thought I would go, and instilled in me passions for pursuits that I had previously never considered. As a 13-year-old at Girl Scout camp, I hiked part of the Appalachian Trail, and knew how it felt to fill my lungs at the top of a mountain with air that tasted like achievement. Throughout high school, with my troop, I organized haunted houses and flag retirement ceremonies, and came to realize the joy such traditions brought me. I interviewed a first responder for my emergency preparedness badge, and in the process, learned that I loved to ask people questions about their lives and their work — a love that blossomed into a career path. And most of all, I developed an appreciation for the value of a job well done — through vision and logic and sheer grit in the face of unpleasant tasks — and the importance having loyal, supportive friends at your side when working hard.
Now, I’ve taken on a big commitment. On Monday, April 21, 2014, I will be running in the 118th annual Boston Marathon in support of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. Not only have I committed to training to run 26.2 miles, I’ve also committed to fundraising for a cause that I believe in. The Girl Scouts mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
Now, as I embark on this adventure of training for the Boston Marathon, all those Girl Scout skills are starting to come in pretty handy.
Please help me reach my goal of $6,000 (or more!) by showing your support to the girls with your generous donation. Contributions can be made at http://crowdrise.com/martinepowers. As you invest in our girls, they return your backing many times over with their gifts of leadership, creativity, and service.
