My name is Mary, I am one of students in Literacy New Jersey Programs at Gloucester County. This program has allowed me to discover the culture of my new country, live with their traditions, enjoy your delicious meals and customs as well as to present my own traditions.
I remember one winter day when I visited Public Library and found a brochure announcing "Learning English Opens Doors" they showed details of the program tutors for learning one by one. I never imagined that from that day not only this program would open doors to me, but also got the opportunity to open up roads for joining a bilingual job, get my driver's license, learn American history and pass my interview and test for citizenship.
Learning English has allowed me manage my home, make payments online, complete registrations, go to the doctor, pharmacy, supermarkets etc. When I go to Philadelphia I prefer to take the bus and is a wonderful experience because I can read the advertisements, directions more carefully, and also guide others who need some help.
I like spending time with my family and visit different places. I'm working everyday with my English class and in my job as volunteer helping at Literacy New Jersey Programs to establish and maintain communication with new partnerships with Latin American companies affiliated to the various chambers of commerce.
I have no doubt that the main enemy for progress in any field of life is fear and this factor sometimes present, especially when you are living in a new country, where there are no ties of friendship and references that you usually build from childhood. Literacy New Jersey's director Betsy Allen and my tutors RonnAnn Risha and Matt Ford are part of my life, I receive support to face new challenges with his non-profit organization
I receive weekly tutoring classes to improve my grammar, conversation, literature and writing. I recently had the opportunity to participate in the annual conference preparing a workshop a presentation about non-profit organization. I thank life that has placed me on the road to Literacy New Jersey and their sponsors who support the program.
