On June 21st, a team of 160 cancer survivors and supporters will embark on a 4,000-mile run across America. One marathon at a time, the team will cross 15 states and more than 500 communities as they work to pass their baton from the Pacific to the Atlantic. I am one of those runners.
My name is Maryam Moore and I’m a Colorado girl through and through. My husband and I have been married for 12 years are raising three fantastic kids in this beautiful place. As you can imagine, caring for my family takes up most of my time. It also brings me immeasurable joy. I feel so blessed.
Nine years ago I started working at my local Y as a fitness instructor. Through the years, I have enjoyed helping hundreds of people improve their physical fitness and plan to continue this work well into my elderly years! About three years ago, one of my class participants encouraged me to try running. I went on and on about how awful I thought running was…but I gave in and went for a few runs. The first time I was able to run for 45 minutes continuously, I was hooked. Since that day I’ve run 5 half-marathons, 391 miles (I’m a numbers freak), and have dedicated each and every Saturday (rain or shine) to my passion for running. My goal is to run a marathon this year.
Now for my connection to the fight against cancer…it was two years ago that we lost my beloved uncle Kesha to acute leukemia. It was only a matter of weeks after his diagnosis that his health started to fail and we lost him. We didn’t even have the chance to fight it. This was my first intimate connection to cancer. And it was heart-breaking.
Last year, the Wellness Director at my Y approached me and asked if I’d be interested in being part of our facility’s pilot program of LIVESTRONG at the Y. We were to be the first Y in Colorado to offer this remarkable program. The pain of losing my uncle was still so fresh but I knew the program would change my life.
Now I run the LIVESTRONG program at our Y and am dedicated to supporting cancer survivors as they work to improve their physical strength, regain confidence in their bodies, and improve their self-esteem. Working with cancer survivors is such a pleasure. I marvel daily at their courage, dedication, and positivity. Some of my closest friends are cancer survivors.
I was excited when I heard about the Million Dollar Marathon, the Coast to Coast For Cancer. This effort will be the perfect marriage of two of my passions…LIVESTRONG and running.
I won’t lie, I’m very intimidated right now as I prepare to run the 26.2 miles. But I have so much love in my heart for the cancer survivors in my life. I feel like running this marathon will be an outward expression of my admiration for them as well as my commitment to helping people rebuild their lives after overcoming cancer. For them, I’ll run. And run and run and run…
