BENEFITING: OVARIAN CANCER NATIONAL ALLIANCE
EVENT DATE: Dec 07, 2014
Thanks so much for checking out our page! We decided to run a half marathon during our junior year of college as a way to (finally) lose our freshman 15 and relax amid med school/grad school apps, school craziness, thesis projects, and various other extracurriculars. Then we realized, we should make our training about something bigger than just us!
Since Mary is a pre-med student and Alisa is a speech-language pathology student, both of us wanted to do something for the health/medical field. As women and as future health professionals, we decided to highlight ovarian cancer as our cause. Ovarian cancer is diagnosed in over 20,000 women a year in the United States alone, with over a 50% fatality rate. It is the 8th most common cause of cancer in women, and the 5th leading cause of cancer death in women.
Both of our families have been affected by this disease, and we hope to kick cancer's butt with your help! We're shooting for $500, but we hope we can raise even more!! 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, which uses the money to advocate for research, provide counseling services and a community for ovarian cancer patients/survivors, and raise awareness by encouraging women everywhere to get tested and lead a healthy lifestyle.
We'll be running the Honolua Tucson Half Marathon on December 7th, so that's our deadline for donations! We'll be keeping everyone updated on our training process and hopefully we'll raise a bunch of money for a good cause and manage to survive our half marathon!
