Marybeth McCarthy McCarthy Caldwell
My name is Marybeth McCarthy Caldwell, and I’m a Registered nurse at Mass General Hospital’s emergency department for the past three years, and I worked on White 6 Orthopedics for six years prior to that. I am thrilled to announce that I will be running the Boston Marathon on the MGH emergency response team – supporting a cause I feel personally connected to and very passionately about.
It all started on April 15th 2013 @ 2:49pm, I had just finished the 117th Boston Marathon & the first bomb went off. Feelings of uneasiness and confusion quickly permeated the air; the sound of sirens rang through the streets w/volume & magnitude unimaginable to me prior. My mind was racing, but the fear was absolutely paralyzing. Just as I will never forget the elation I felt after crossing the finish line, I will never forget the crippling fear that followed it.
I was lucky, physically uninjured as a result of the brutal acts of terror, but more than 250 others were not as lucky. I recognize how absolutely critical it was that the many injured citizens that day were able to rely on a solid team of people who did not freeze in the face of fear. Those hurt were able to count on the collaboration of local hospitals & personal from city, state & federal organizations who had practiced and prepared for situations JUST like that one.
On April 15th 2013, as fear invaded the city of Boston, there were people who were prepared; people who knew what to do. They did not hesitate or freeze in the face of fear, as I had that day. As a result, they were able to triage proficiently, limit suffering, save limbs, & save lives.
I want to run the 2017 Boston Marathon in support of Mass General’s Emergency Response team because I truly recognize its value and imminent need. I want to help the organization continue to grow & strengthen by education, practice, & research, to prepare for whichever disaster is thrown our way. Additionally, I will finally get the opportunity to take a proactive stance against the fear that consumed me in 2013- and prove that it will NEVER stop me from running.
Donations of any amount, even just $1.00, would mean the world to me and would be benefiting a truly important and valuable cause. Thank you all for your support. I cannot wait to run on Monday April 17h.
