THE STORY:

Mary G. Martin P. O. Box 260 Pell City, AL 35125 December 17, 2015 I need help to repair the house I grew up in. My parents had this house built in the early 1960's. The structure of the house is in very good shape. In order to get the house in order for me to live in I need around $60,000. The house was hit by a tree from a lighting strike. This caused the sister that was living in the house at the time to move out. She did not keep the insurance on the house. When the city got involved due to the property not being kept up, I had 30 days to get the house up to code or be fined. A realtor and a lawyer stepped in because they new I didn't have the money to due the repairs. All I could do in 30 days was get the house secured. The whole house has to be brought up to code. The things that needs to be done includes total re-wiring; the house has knob and tube wiring. The electrical box has to be removed and placed in a different location. All windows have to be replaced, new roof, doors, all new plumbing, heating and air condition. Walls need new sheet rock due to mold. Upon me removing potions of the sheet rock from the walls, I found out the house was built without any insulation being put in. Even the attic had no insulation. So the walls and the attic need insulation. The floors have to be repaired and/or re-done. Both porches and steps have to be replaced. The crawl space which is high enough to stand up in has to have the walls sealed. The sewer lines need to be replaced along with a larger septic tank or maybe having to connect to the sewage system. Anything, etc. that the city building inspector says has to be done. Since the house is on the main highway across from the postal office the property has to be cleared of the trees and bushes that have grown up around the house. The house is dear to me because my mother walked to work everyday doing day work. My father also walked to work everyday doing yard work. He finally got a job as a janitor at an elementary school due to one of the people he worked for was the principal at the school. When the current janitor retired she offered him the job. My parents were able to get this house built. This was the most wonderful time in my teen's life because our other house was like a little house on the prairie. After working for a company for 34 years and it shutting down with no company retirement, I'm on a fixed income and cannot afford the repairs for the house. Thanks in advance for your contributions. Sincerely Mary G. Martin
