BENEFITING: Boston Medical Center
This fundraiser supports an exciting new initiative at Boston Medical Center to study the effects of massage therapy and music therapy in an inpatient setting. There is increasing evidence that both massage therapy and music therapy can improve important patient health outcomes like pain intensity and mood/anxiety, as well as patient experience while in the hospital. This study will evaluate the use of these therapies for inpatients, identifying ways that these practices can be effectively integrated into a conventional healthcare setting.
Patients participating in the study will be randomized to receive daily massage therapy, music therapy or usual care only during their inpatient stay. We will evaluate patient outcomes based on a variety of measures including satisfaction with their stay, control of their symptoms, and use of pain or anxiety medication. We will compare these outcomes with the outcomes of patients who received only the usual care during their stay.
The data gathered in this study will provide crucial preliminary information about the ways in which massage and music therapy could improve patient satisfaction, reduce symptoms such as pain, and ultimately lower health care costs by decreasing the need for medications and reducing the length of hospital stay.
This study will take place under the auspices of the Boston Medical Center's Program for Integrative Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. The mission of the Program for Integrative Medicine is to pioneer a widely accessible, multicultural, cross-disciplinary, national model of integrative health for all through clinical services, education, research and advocacy.
