BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
This will be my fifth consecutive Boston (and eleventh marathon), each time as a member of the Mass General Pediatric Hematology Oncology Team, and each time partnered with my good buddy, Franklin, who is in remission from leukemia and who completed school in 2013.
Professionally and personally, I have benefited from my association with MGH, hence the desire to pay something back.
I want to convey the two highlights of marathon weekend for me (and I think most people who run for MGH): the first is the pasta dinner on the Sunday evening before the race when the runners accompany their patient partners onto the stage. The runners then look on as their patient partners are presented with medals to honor their courage in fighting cancer. The second is cresting Heartbreak Hill on race day at mile 20, seeing all the patient partners, their families and volunteers on the right-hand side. The cheers are deafening and it's hard not to be affected by it all at one of the toughest points of the course.
While proud of having qualified for Boston 2015 with the tougher standards, I'm prouder to be running again for the MassGeneral Hospital Marathon Team - Kids with Cancer. Under the auspices of Dr Weinstein, the Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology Department does amazing work, with over $0.90 in every dollar raised going directly towards patient care and therapy.
With this, I'm requesting your support for a cause with which I am so proud to be associated.

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time...has raised over $10 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
