THE STORY:

My brother Ian and I are running the Boston Marathon this April in support of our mother Nia, who is currently undergoing ovarian cancer treatment at Mass General Hospital (MGH) in Boston.  She underwent surgery and chemo last year, and is now part of a promising clinical trial.  We found it fitting to run for the Mass General team, as the wonderful team at MGH also treated our stepfather, though he lost his battle with a deadly brain cancer (Glioblastoma) in 2011.

While both our mom and stepdad were diagnosed with cancer as adults, we as a family are committed to the fight for all ages, and feel especially for those who have had to endure the disease’s hardships so young.  As a result, we are running the 2015 Boston Marathon as part of the PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY TEAM AT MGH.

Running the marathon will serve as a tribute to all those affected by pediatric cancer, the tremendous courage, grace, and positivity our mom has shown fighting her disease, our late step-father, and the hospital that has been so supportive of our family over the past few years.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.

This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.

We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
