BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
The Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) first began caring for children in 1821. MGH bears not only the largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, but the largest research program of any medical center in North America. “Fighting Kids’ Cancer… One Step at a Time” is dedicated to innovating further and again.
Although the last 3 decades have seen nearly uniform death sentences transfigured into 85% cure rates for newly diagnosed childhood cancers, these afflictions continue to claim more lives before adulthood than any other disease today.
Volunteering as a teen in a Child Life Program exposed me to the incomprehensible nature of the suffering of innocents. It remains hard to witness how youth and their families can be shattered by cancer. Cancer migrated closer to home when before her 20th birthday, a childhood friend of mine who had blossomed into a beauty queen and an aspiring veterinanian had succumbed to the humiliations and aggressions of breast cancer. My mother’s life went next within a year, at an age very near mine now.
Success is a team effort, especially when the problem is daunting. Every little step, every dollar, every wish, every word…
Let’s make a choice in our many moments that we ourselves are blessed with, to extend and improve those coming to the children near and far.
What happens in Boston (when it comes to the victories of medical research or undaunted runners!) doesn’t stay in Boston…
With love and gratitude,
(former Transfusion Medicine Fellow at MGH/HJPTM, now at University Health Network in Toronto, but forever a fan of Beantown and my inspiring mentors & colleagues)
More information from MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL for the curious:
Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time...has raised over $10 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
