BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
My brother and I are excited and honored to be running our first Boston Marathon in 2015 for the PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY TEAM AT MGH. We feel very connected to MGH and are so happy to have the chance to give back and assist them in the ongoing fight to end childhood cancer.
In the past several years, we have had two immediate family members treated by the incredible team at MGH’s Cancer Center. My stepfather, sadly, lost his fight with Glioblastoma in 2011. Just two years later, my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After a Thanksgiving Day surgery in 2013 and numerous chemo cycles, she was temporarily cancer-free before the disease returned not long thereafter. She is currently in clinical trials and travels to MGH every other week for treatment.
Through both of these experiences, my brother and I have become very familiar with the halls, and with those who walk to them, of the Yawkey Building. We feel very close and very grateful to the MGH doctors and staff – some of whom feel more like close friends or relatives now - for helping us through every difficult turn.
While both our mom and stepdad started their fights later on in life, we as a family are committed to the cause for all ages, and feel especially for those who have had to endure the disease’s hardships so young.
We are running in honor of all those affected by pediatric cancer, for our mom, our late stepdad, and for MGH and all the institutions like it that help pave the road to a cure.

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time...has raised over $10 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
