BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
This year I will be participating in the Boston Marathon as a member of the Mass General Marathon Team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer…One Step at a Time and raising money to support pediatric cancer research and patient care programs at the Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Cancer Center.
As you may know, my older brother Gus, was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2002. After a long fight throughout his years as a teenager, he ultimately succumbed to his disease passing away in September 2007, nine months before he was expected to graduate from high school. However, during those years he demonstrated extraordinary perseverance and courage, refusing to let his illness prevent him from living what years of life he had to the fullest. While the entire experience was tragic, the lessons he taught me throughout his experience has had a profound effect on who I am today and I would not be taking on a challenge such as the Boston Marathon without experiencing his character as he endured his final years.
The funds raised by the Mass General Marathon Team go directly to the MGHfC Cancer Center and help support clinical and laboratory research in childhood cancer, as well as supportive care programs including wellness services like art and music therapy; parent, teen and sibling support groups; and child life specialists who help patients cope with illness and treatment. Many of these programs I experienced while my brother was ill and I can attest to the high standard Mass General holds themselves to when providing treatment, especially to children.
Thank you in advance for your support! Together we can make a difference in the lives of these children and young adults and find a cure for childhood cancer!

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time...has raised over $10 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
