THE STORY:

Steven Davis wrote -

I am deeply honored to once again be running the Mass  General  Marathon Team.  This will be my fourth Boston Marathon.  Ginger, my lovely wife of forty years, passed away in May of 2011 from ovarian cancer. She had been a patient at MGH for over four years and we both found the care to be simply amazing.  Ginger was so touched by the care that she received that she wanted to give something back and we came up with a plan while she was still a patient. Soon after she passed away, I began to work with the MHG Development Office and we established the Ginger Sutherland Davis Nursing Scholarship to help MGH nurses pursue their nurse practitioner degree.  Thus far, my two children (Scott and Janet) have awarded four scholarships and have been touched to be able to do so.

This scholarship, to be awarded annually will help future patients and contribute to an eventual cure, both sincere goals of Ginger.  It was through my interactions with the MGH Development Office in setting up the scholarship that I first heard of the MGH Marathon Team. Well, it seemed like a perfect fit for me in several ways: it would not only honor Ginger but also help the brave children being treated at the MGH Pediatric Oncology Department.

I’m  privileged to be a “four-peat” patient partner for Stephen Broderick, who completed his three year treatment regimen  for leukemia in July of 2014. We decided to partner again to help other children being treated at MGH. I am so happy to be running for him again this year.  I will also be running in memory of Ginger and for Barkley Sutherland, our sister-in-law who passed away from breast cancer only seven months after Ginger.  Barkely and Ginger loved each other as if they were real sisters. They were both teachers and would be happy seeing their names helping the children. I will be wearing their names on my running shirt again.

Being a  member of the MGH team is one of the most rewarding and meaningful activities I have ever been part of.  All of us have the shared goals of helping the children and working for a cure.  I once again ask my friends and relatives who have been so generous and kind the past three years to help once again by donating to my run.  I THANK YOU ALL!

MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL wrote -

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time...has raised over $10 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.

Patient-Partner Program

The MassGeneral Marathon Team is centered around the Marathon Patient-Partner Program, in which runners are paired with patients undergoing cancer treatment at MGHfC. When our runners set out on Boston’s grueling 26.2-mile course, they not only raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research; they inspire and bring hope to the youngest patients we serve.

Each year approximately 50 children undergoing treatment are paired with Mass General runners. Some runners take part to support young patients they already know and love while others bond with a courageous child they have never met through the Patient-Partner Program. At an emotional pre-race pasta party and ceremony on the night preceding the marathon, runners presented a medal of honor to their patient-partner. It symbolizes a shared personal commitment in the fight against pediatric cancer, and represents all the hope we have that our efforts at Mass General will lead to a cure for this devastating disease.

Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by the Mass General Marathon Team...Fighting Kids’ Cancer One Step at a Time.... MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.

This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.

We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile. Mass General and Boston...Together We Finish!
