BENEFITING: THE BOSTON EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Feb 01, 2013
My granddaughter, Ita, is in kindergarten at the Mather School here in Dorchester. We're hoping that her brother Charlie will go there as well in a couple of years. It's a great school, with wonderful teachers - but seriously underfunded.
I'm trying to help, and hope you will too. My personal goal is to raise $1,000 for Ita's teacher, Karla Settles, to use for badly needed supplies in her classroom. Here's more about the school and Ms. Settles.
America’s first elementary school.
The Mather Elementary School, is the first public elementary school in North America, located in the historic Meeting House Hill neighborhood of Dorchester. The recession has taken a serious toll on the Mather and all Boston Public Schools. Over the past two years, budget cuts have left classrooms in need of materials and supplies – let alone Smartboards and other educational technology.
Meet Karla Settles' class
Karla teaches “K1” – full-day pre-kindergarten for four-year-olds – at the Mather, where she has worked for the past five years.
She is inspired and impressed by her young students’ interest and skill in oral language, writing and math activities. Above all, she loves hearing her students say, “Ms. Settles, I love coming to school.”
Ms. Settles notes that budget cuts have greatly reduced the school’s supplies budget. To help her students reach their full potential, her classroom wish list includes: literacy materials, arts and craft supplies, paper, stamps, books on tape, and whiteboards; “manipulatives” for hands-on learning, such as games, puzzles, objects to build and construct; costumes and props to stage dramatic plays; printer ink; and classroom furniture, such as shelving to divide the room and display materials.”
