Welcome to the Mather Playworks Program website. Playworks is an organization that transforms schools by providing play and physical activity at recess and throughout the school day. Addressing the healthy development of Boston’s youth and the amount of physical activity provided in schools is a critical step toward building strong school communities and helping Mather students grow emotionally, socially and physically.
Meet the Mather
The Mather Elementary School, is the first public elementary school in North America. It is located in the historic Meeting House Hill neighborhood of Dorchester, in Boston, Massachusetts.
The school serves a highly diverse population of 605 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5:
• 98% are children of color.
• 85% are from low-income homes.
• 50% speak a first language other than English.
• 15% receive special education services.
• 100% dream of achieving great things.
Playworks restores valuable teaching time, reduces bullying, increases physical activity and improves the school and learning environment. Playworks teaches children to resolve their own conflicts that arise at recess and carry over to the classroom, improving school climate both on and off the playground. Playworks transforms recess into a safe, fun and inclusive environment that gets students active and engaged so they can return to the classroom focused and ready to learn. Playworks coaches implement a five-component, youth development play and physical activity curriculum to build young people’s life skills, provide them with meaningful roles and leadership opportunities, and foster supportive relationships with peers and adults.
You can make a difference.
