THE STORY:

MATRIX HUMAN SERVICES wrote -

The Matrix Human Services Center (Matrix Center) is located on Detroit's eastside and serves the community 360 days a year, Monday thru Friday from 6:30am to 10 pm and weekends, 8 am to 5 pm. Donated funds will be used for much needed roof repairs( it leaks when it rains!), client services and building utilities.Below are just a few of the Matrix Center's impressive service outcomes for 2016:

  1. Over 1,500 community residents and families have benefited from Center emergency food programs, including the Forgotten Harvest weekly free food distribution on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of each month.
  2. 670 children and youth received a new winter coat.
  3. Over 1,000 children and youth have participated in onsite after school, weekend and summer enrichment and recreational activities.
  4. Since the Matrix’s Center’s opening in 1997, over 15,000 Detroit adults, youth and children have taken advantage of onsite education, workforce development, computer training, literacy, GED and recreational programs.

The Matrix Center is most proud of its 20 year history of hosting major community events which have improved the social fabric and cohesiveness of a community struggling with crime, blight, poverty and despair.  On an annual basis the Matrix Center’s Harvest Fest (October), Thanksgiving Dinner (November), Movie Days (monthly), Angel Tree (December),  and  The Osborn Parade (August). These events routinely attract between 200 to 2,000 people.

Each month upwards of 3,000 Detroit and suburban residents visit the Center for much needed services, activities and community events. The Matrix Center encompasses a Mission Partner Network, 150 organizations and community groups, providing programs and services within the building. Services and programs within the building include: Basic need services – food, clothing, housing, counseling and access to preventive health services, after school programs for youth, early childhood programs, community development initiatives, senior programs, employment readiness programs, technology center, crisis interventions services for youth (SAFE Place), youth and adult literacy programs, entrepreneurship training and more.

Matrix Human Services (Matrix), a 501 (C) (3) community based and non-profit  agency, was founded in 1906 by a small and generous group of women who recognized the importance of helping the less fortunate who migrated to Detroit seeking a new life and finding them in an unfamiliar environment. The agency operates out 56 locations in Detroit and 9 locations in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Matrix serves 25,000 Detroit residents annually through programs providing a continuum of over 60 direct services to pregnant women, children, youth, adults and seniors.
