BENEFITING: Saha Global
EVENT DATE: Dec 28, 2016
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. My name is Matthew Leonard. I am a Junior at Virginia Tech studying Civil Engineering. I have been given an incredible opportunity to improve drinking water quality for those who lack access to it. I will be traveling to Ghana this coming winter as a SAHA Global Field Representative, working in a team to improve water sanitation in rural communities through the establishment of water businesses operated by women of the community in which we will be working. Please take a moment to read more about SAHA's mission below and watch the short video.
SAHA Global is responding to a water crisis in Northern Ghana. Nearly 800,000 Ghanaians in the region lack access to clean drinking water, more often than not relying on contaminated dugouts. Water-borne illnessses, such as diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera result from the unsanitary water conditions. The most vulnerable victims are children under the age of five, with approximately 15-25% afflicted with diarrheal disease.
SAHA Global aims to enact lasting change in Ghana through the establishment of community water-businesses. Using cheap and locally available water treatment materials, SAHA Field Representatives train the women of a rural community in proper water treatment techniques. Women of these communities continue the water treatment operation and sell the clean water to members of their community, making enough money to sustain operations over an extended timeframe. SAHA's water business solution not only tackles water contamination, but also empowers women in the community. Individual households are then given impermeable water containers to store the clean water.
SAHA Field Representatives help with every step in the process, from the original proposition meeting with community leaders to the successful start of a sustainable clean water business. Field Representatives then monitor the progression of the water business, fielding input from community members and resolving initial issues in the business operation. Field Representatives also conduct an educational campaign within the community's schools to promote the sustainability of the water business for future generations.
My role within SAHA Global will be that of a Field Representative. Part of my Civil Engineering education compels me to use my knowledge for the benefit of others. Early exposure to the challenges preventing communities from access to clean water will help me learn how to overcome those obstacles and one day use my experience to improve the living conditions of others on a larger scale.
All funds raised will go directly to the purchase of start-up materials for the water businesses.
