BENEFITING: Imerman Angels
EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2017
Thinking back to December of 2005 while sitting in my Doctors office as he spoke the words "Matt, you have Cancer", It was difficult to fathom what challenges would lie ahead of me. I wondered if I would ever get the chance to walk my then girlfriend down the aisle on our wedding day, or would I ever get the chance to have or hold a child of my own, But never in a million years would I have thought I would have the opportunity and the desire to run a Full Marathon, but here I am today with this incredible opportunity to support a program that gave me so much during a difficult time of my life, and still gives me the opportunity to give back to the Cancer community.
During my 3 year treatment for Lymphoma and Leukemia (ALL) in 2005, I was faced with many challenges that most 23 year olds would never even think about. While most of my friends were deciding what new bar to check out, or new local band to check out, I was spending many of my days in the hospital receiving Chemotherapy daily, while trying to figure out how I would pay my rent and car payments and how I would make it to my next follow-up appointment.
This was such an isolating feeling, and to make it worse I could find no one to relate to for most of the other patients on the Cancer floor were older and everything was just so overwhelming. Don't get me wrong my family was great in offering support and prayer to me on a regular basis, but something was missing. I needed someone who I could talk to that had "walked" in my shoes, someone who could say "I've been where you are, and have beaten it and you can too!"
This is exactly what support Imerman Angels provides to patients and caregivers. They match up a cancer fighter with a cancer survivor who has the same diagnosis and who are close in age so you can have someone to talk to who knows what you are going through. This program has introduced me to MANY wonderful cancer fighters and survivors all of whom have affected my life in someway and will continue to do so for a lifetime. Though this journey is a long a difficult one, Imerman Angels offers "light" at a time when things can seem so dark.
Please consider even a small donation to ensure that no patient has to walk through this journey alone. Thank you for your time and God Bless.
