BENEFITING: LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation
EVENT DATE: Jul 30, 2016
Seems like only yesterday, Lisa Arnoa and I were chit-chatting at work talking about different hobbies. I talked to her about how I had done some Tough Mudders and she told me she was into running half-marathons and races of that nature. We both thought each other were crazy (that's a severe understatement and yes, we still think the other is crazy)... I thought "who's nuts enough to run 13.1 miles or more straight??" ... she thought "who's crazy enough to want to roll in the mud, get electrocuted, and jump into freezing water??" Well, me and my big mouth decided to challenge Lisa...I told her she should, along with our friends and co-workers run a Tough Mudder.. she agreed but made me promise that I'd run a half-marathon. I was about to shy away until she looked me in the eye and said, "C'mon Matty...it's for a group that benefits Sal"(her amazing son!)... wow, nice way to slip a knife between my rib cage and twist it, Lisa! So... I got hustled...... And aside from my beautiful wife and kids, it's one of the greatest things that happened to me!
Not only has running for LuMind RDS been worth it for me by supporting their mission to support Down syndrome research but I personally have gained so much for my own life. I alwasy knew it was the right thing for me to be involved with when my mother Ann let me know how proud she was of me for giving back...and putting others before myself. By doing so, I've actually been given more than anyone could understand. Although I lost my mother days before last years 24 hour run, I knew she wanted me to continue my mission. So I ran in the event and the love and support from my fellow friends and LuMind RDS runners was just what I needed!
Lisa and I have both suffered the loss of our mothers this past year, but we know they're still proud and wanting us to continue their legacy of giving to others... what better way to honor the woman who shaped me into who I am today and who I will be tomorrow.
I love you Mom and know you're watching over us! Thank you to everyone who is supporting us ... know it will never go unnoticed!!
