Matt Pierson Courts for Kids Trip to the Dominican Republic
Organized by: Matt Pierson
My name is Matt Pierson and I am a student athlete at the University of Oregon. A group of my fellow student athletes and I will be going to the Dominican Republic to help construct a sport court in Batey 7. We will be traveling from Santo Domingo to the South of the country to Batey 7. A batey is a poor community established around the sugarcane industry mostly populated by Haitian immigrants who remain the most marginalized group in the country. The fact that the town does not have a name, just a number attached to it shows the insignificance of the community in the minds of many. In Batey 7 there are 350 houses with a total population of 1500. There is a primary school from grade 1-6, preschool for kids 2-5, but no secondary school. There is a private clinic and 6 churches. Currently there is no community center, no court, and only a small playground for the children to use. The program we are going with is Courts for Kids. This organization focuses on providing children with the opportunity to play sports in areas that are economically disadvantaged. Thank you for considering donating to this fundraiser.
