Support Mattress for MS Patient

I am creating a small piece of comfort for a 60 year old woman, who for the past several years has been bed-bound, relying on me solely for her needs and comfort. Having a comfortable, and proper mattress for her special needs will alleviate her pain, and prevent the recurrence of skin breakdown.

Health insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid need to reevaluate their guidelines for such specialized beds and medical grade mattresses. Covering these units only up until the ulcer or wound closes does not cut it, as the skin is still thin, pink, and much like a baby skin. It takes at least another 6 months according to doctors, wound nurses, and other specialists before the skin returns to normal thickness. Taking away such a support surface at such a critical time only tends to exacerbate the wound into opening again, which has been the case with my mother. This is the 4th mattress we've been on due to wounds, and I would like to have one permanently so we can have a worry free life as far as skin breakdown is concerned. Ultimately, it would be cheaper and more cost effective in the long run for insurance companies, etc., to allow patients to remain on these units longer, or work with them on a cost share at the very least to purchase it, rather than going with the traditional rental system, and continually paying for wound care nursing, and supplies.
