THE STORY:

Domestic violence is everywhere yet it get's very little attention unless it involves a professional athlete. All of our communities are filled with domestic violence cases that never get much attention. There are shelters that help these victim's but there is always a need for extra funding to help them build a new life after some horrific experiences. That is what Friends of Womensafe does, raises the extra money for a local shelter. Here is a story of success and one of the reasons I commit so much energy towards raising money for this organization:

"Tracy came in to the shelter on the fence. She was scared to go back home, but she was also nervous to live in a shelter with communal living, and furthermore with strangers. The first time she entered WomenSafe's doors, her boys were clinging to her legs. One was 4, the other 6. She was never allowed to have a job. Her husband used this to control her. Needless to say, she had no idea how she was going to support her two angels. After touring the facility and taking a minute to breathe, she realized it was past dinner time. Her two boys hadn't left her side, and were confused, scared, and hungry. An advocate showed her to the kitchen and pointed out the food and cooking supplies. When the advocate asked, "What would you like to make for dinner?" Tracy broke down in tears. After taking a few minutes to recover, she told our advocate that she had never before been able to answer that question on her own before. Her husband decided when they were eating and what they were having. Once his mind was made up, there was no changing it. After a while, she stopped trying and knew it was safer to listen to him.she eventually lost her own voice in her relationship. As the advocate consoled her, she asked Tracy, "If you could make anything in the world for dinner, what would you make?" After a moment of hesitation, Tracy replied, "I want macaroni and cheese with hot dogs in it." Tracy received assistance from our Court Advocate to file a protection order, and she worked with our Employment Specialist to further her job skills and land a job! Before our Donation's Coordinator helped her move into her new home, she told her she would never again let anybody make her choices for her again.

Thank you for your donations!
