BENEFITING: FRIENDS OF YOUTH
Our May 2016 Charity Pick is Friends of Youth. Part of our contribution is a “hands on dinner” at the Landing this Monday at May 23rd …. Since this is a "small" venue and only a few of us can contribute, we are also setting up a Go Fund Me account… ALL Funds will be donated to Friends of Youth.
I have included some highlights from this wonderful organization as well as a link to their webpage.
We all want to make a difference in the world, even in some small way. The story of Friends of Youth is clear proof that ordinary people can come together to create something extraordinary–transforming dreams into reality.
In 1950, a Washington resident named Iva Matsen saw the challenge faced by her community: not enough quality foster homes for at-risk youth. She and her husband joined with other members of the University Congregational Church to take the critical step from concern to action.
That was the beginning; in 1951, Friends of Youth was officially incorporated. It was a place where young people could find a sympathetic ear, grow personally and contribute positively to their communities. Since then, Friends of Youth has grown into a leader in developing, providing and advocating for services for children, youth and their families. To this day, members of the Matsen family continue to be active and involved in the organization.
Throughout the decades, the list of donors, volunteers, friends and staff of Friends of Youth has continued to grow. But while the organization has expanded impressively since its humble beginnings, its founding principles have endured: an unwavering dedication to providing quality services; the flexibility to meet new and emerging needs; and most important, a commitment to securing the futures of the most vulnerable members of the community.
Mrs. Matsen and her co-founders were ordinary individuals, with a vision and a shared commitment to changing the world, one life at a time. More than 50 years later, each person who becomes involved with Friends of Youth has an opportunity to build something just as extraordinary.
1. We offer much-needed services.Friends of Youth is unique among social agencies in Western Washington. We provide a continuum of youth services through 20 different program sites, including treatment for those kids who are already experiencing problems, and prevention services to keep problems from developing in other youths. Our distinctive therapeutic approach includes treatment, counseling, education, and skill-building; we open our arms to youths who have had difficulties in foster care; and we operate the only overnight shelters for youth on the Eastside.
2. We’ve been serving the Eastside for over 50 years.Few organizations on the Eastside know the community as well as Friends of Youth. For decades, we have been a beacon of hope for local young people in challenging circumstances—and your support will ensure the wellbeing of future generations.
3. We achieve positive results. An astounding 100% of youths leaving the Friends of Youth foster care program at age 18 are currently either working or in school. And up to 85% of residents in our transitional housing program move on to stable housing.
4. We’ve got a seal of approval.Friends of Youth is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children, the most respected U.S. accreditation agency for services for families and children. It ensures that the agency holds itself to the highest standards for professional and administrative performance.
