THE STORY:

In Africa, a school uniform is much more than a set of clothes. A gift of just $10 can help a girl stay in school, stay safe and reach her potential!

A couple of summers ago, I was fortunate enough to travel to Tanzania, Africa, where I witnessed, first hand, the struggles of the girls there.

Many of these girls are lucky enough to go to school as part of the SAGE (Supporting Adolescent Girls' Empowerment) program, but they are in need of uniforms. They are required by the government in order to attend school; however, these uniforms are a lot of money for struggling families.

To save money, these families pass the uniforms down and try to mend them by sewing extra fabric where the shirt gaps or where there are missing buttons. These uniforms are worn throughout most of the girl’s education, which means that they become small and worn out.

Last year, CARE was able to provide about 300 uniforms for the girls in the SAGE program. However, there are nearly 1,600 more girls in dire need of new shirts, skirts, shoes, and socks.

For one whole uniform, it costs just $30. That is less than half of what we in the US might spend for one pair of shoes. Not only will $30 give a girl in Africa a uniform, it will provide jobs for the local women who sew the skirts and make the uniforms.

Here are what some of the girls have to say about their uniforms:

“My uniform tells everyone around my village that I go to school. That I will make something of myself when I get older.”

“I wear my uniform to school and also when I walk to fetch the water. People who see me on the road know that I attend school and if I don’t make it back home then people will miss me. My family, my teachers, my classmates – they will look for me.”

Please consider a donation to support these girls:

  • $30 provides one full school uniform (skirt, shirt, shoes)
  • $10 provides one blue skirt
  • $10 provides one white dress shirt
  • $10 provides one pair of shoes

Here, a uniform is just an outfit that you wear to school. But for these girls, their uniform gives them a suit of armor in their daily lives against prejudice, injustice and inequality.
