I want to tell you about Andrea, just a regular 17 year old Filipino girl with the most contagious grin. She loves fried chicken, plays volleyball, and excels at school. Andrea also comes from what Filipinos call a broken family—her parents separated, leaving her mother alone with two children and a full-time job as a domestic helper. As her mother’s job would not allow the children to be with her at work, Andrea came to reside at a residential center, Grace Christian Mission, in 2005. I met her a few years later as a Peace Corps Volunteer there. She has settled well into life at the center, and despite her background, is a happy youth.
Andrea had an accident in March, resulting in a broken hip. She underwent a partial hip replacement, but further tests uncovered a benign but aggressive bone tumor which had made her bones quite brittle and exacerbated her injury. A series of bone modifying agents would be required as treatment, at a cost of $2,300.
Andrea’s mother struggles to stay by her daughter’s side throughout the hospital visits, causing her to miss many days of work, and has since lost her job. Grace Christian Mission has been able to raise funds for many of the medical expenses but their financial capacity is also limited.
Andrea is resilient and courageous, and her treatment is reliable. Since her family and the residential center are financially constrained, I am hoping to raise as much of the $2,300 as I can. The money will go to Grace Christian Mission, the responsible party for Andrea’s financial matters. Andrea is a strong and inspiring girl, and with your support she can overcome this unexpected obstacle.
Any donation you give can make a difference, so please help Andrea!
