EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 29, 2015
I am excited to be running in the 2015 Boston Marathon with the Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership (MBHP) team. MBHP helps low and moderate income families find and retain affordable housing in Boston so that these individuals will have a chance to improve their lives.
For the past several years, I have been involved in various volunteer organizations that have allowed me to interact with these families. For example, I have tutored numerous kids from low income families whose average household income is less than $27,000. Through this experience, I have witnessed the impact that a stable home can have on a student's education. I distinctly remember the time when Caleb, my mentee, asked me why he should try in school when his life was so unstable – he never “knew when his family would be evicted again.” During a home visit, my mentee, Maya, showed me her pink Disney desk and proudly called it her “home” because it always traveled with her. My experiences made me realize that having a stable, affordable home can be an important foundation for these children’s academic success.
My goal is to raise at least $5,000 as I finish my very first Marathon in a city that I’ve been fortunate to call home for the past 26 years (and counting!). I am grateful for the opportunity to help these families get back on track and provide a stable home environment so that kids like Caleb and Maya will have a reason to focus on their schoolwork.
A gift from you, whether big or small, would help motivate me as I begin to log hundreds of miles this winter building up for the marathon on April 20, 2015. More importantly, your contribution would help individuals and families throughout the Greater Boston area know that they have a place to call home.
RUN FOR YOURSELF.
RUN FOR BOSTON.
RUN TO END HOMELESSNESS.
