BENEFITING: San Francisco Parks Alliance
EVENT DATE: Jan 15, 2013
Among the things that matter most to us are strong, healthy neighborhoods... and great food! Unfortunately not everyone has access to these essential building blocks. So we're proud to be associated with two organizations that work together to increase food access and strengthen communities in San Francisco's Mission District and beyond: Mission Community Market and Urban Sprouts.
Urban Sprouts brings the power of school gardens and food literacy to those neighborhoods most in need. As public schools struggle for funding, Urban Sprouts ensures that students are eating healthy and blossoming as learners. Since 2003, Urban Sprouts has engaged over 4,500 youth and community members in growing and preparing fresh produce, advocating for healthy food, and making connections between
gardens and healthy environments.
Mission Community Market (MCM) is more than just a farmers’ market. It is an open-air marketplace made up of farmers, small local businesses, and after-school programs. MCM promotes family health and economic development, and is creating a fun, beautiful public space for the Mission District. This past year, MCM created the “Mercado Match” that doubles the benefit WIC and Calfresh (formerly food stamps) participants can use for fresh fruits and vegetables at the market. With the Mercado Match, Urban Sprouts and MCM have helped over 1,400 people access fresh fruits and vegetables, learn about healthy eating, and enjoy eating fresh foods.
Lisa used to work as a garden educator at Urban Sprouts and now serves on the organization's advisory board. And Jordan serves on the advisory board of Mission Community Market. And these two organizations are close partners: Urban Sprouts hosts bi-weekly cooking demonstrations at a booth at the Mission Community Market, and the two organizations collaborate on fundraising and program development.
Please consider supporting Urban Sprouts and Mission Community Market as much as you are able! The proceeds of this fundraiser will be split between the two organizations.
- A $50 gift funds supplies for one Urban Sprouts cooking demonstration at the Mission Community Market.
- A $100 gift will allow MCM to provide one day of health education with community "promotoras."
- A $250 gift funds an Urban Sprouts community health presentation to engage communities in advocating for access to healthy food.
- A $500 gift funds one month of health education and a “Play Street” at MCM, where families and after-school groups can engage in fun food games, open play and exercise.
Thank you for joining us in support of these great organizations. May your holidays be merry, and your meals delicious!
